Cobham is a large, well-heeled village in the Borough of Elmbridge, about 17 miles south-west of London and 10 miles north-east of Guildford, tucked into a loop of the River Mole. It sits just off the A3, with the M25 close by at Junction 10, and its old core, Cobham Tilt, has been recorded since the 14th century.
Its history goes back to the Iron Age, and it appears in the Domesday Book as “Covenham,” meaning a settlement curved by a river. In the 1920s and 30s, Cobham had a real motoring and aviation buzz: aviation pioneer Sir Thomas Sopwith lived here, and Reid Railton built his famous Railton straight-eight cars at the Fairmile works nearby, helped along by the area’s closeness to the old Brooklands racing circuit.
Its best-known attraction is Painshill Park, a spectacular 18th-century landscape garden that’s doubled as a filming location for Bridgerton and Black Mirror.
