Godalming, another market town in south-west Surrey (it has a few), sits at the confluence of the Rivers Wey and Ock in the Borough of Waverley.

In medieval times, Godalming grew wealthy on the wool trade, with sheep grazing the North Downs and the River Wey powering fulling mills. By the 18th century, that had morphed into a notable hosiery and knitting industry, plus tanning and papermaking, all reliant on the river for water and power.  Talking of Power…in 1881, Godalming became the first town anywhere to have a public electricity supply.

For visitors, the Godalming Museum, housed in a timber-framed building dating from the 1440s, is a lovely way into its history.
