This quick step guide will show you how to find your Wi-Fi password if you are unable to remember or is not accessible from the router itself. This can be achieved using a Windows or Mac computer.
NB. For these methods to work you will need to already be connected to the Wi-Fi network you need.
Method 1 – Using control panel on Windows
- Open the Control Panel through the Start Menu and select the Network and Sharing Centre
- Select your Wi-Fi network
- Once this opens select Wireless Properties and then select the Security tab which will provide you more details about your Wi-Fi network
- Select the Show Characters box and this will show the Wi-Fi password for this network
Method 2 (Advanced Method) – Using Command Prompt (cmd) on Windows
- Select the Start Menu and type “cmd”
- This will then open a command prompt window
- Then enter the following command – Netsh wlan show profile name= “your Wi-Fi name” key=clear
- This will then provide you all the information about your Wi-Fi network including the Wi-Fi password next to the Key Content option
Method 3 – using Keychain Access on Mac
- Open Keychain Access from Applications > Utilities from the Go tab
- Select System from the left hand panel and then select the Passwords tab at the top
- Double click on your network name to display the additional Wi-Fi information
- Tick the “Show Password” box and enter your admin password
- The Wi-Fi password will then be displayed
Method 4 (Advanced Method) – using Terminal on Mac
- Open terminal using the magnifying glass in the top right of the screen
- Then enter the command – security find-generic-password -wa “wifiname”
- Then enter your admin credentials and your Wi-Fi password will be displayed
