Back in 1618, a local cowherd named Henry Wicker clocked his cattle refusing to drink from a puddle on Epsom Common. Turns out said puddle was extra rich in magnesium sulphate. The resulting “Epsom Salts” made the town one of England’s first fashionable spa resorts.
As the spa faded in the 18th century, horse racing on Epsom Downs stepped in to fill the gap, and the Derby, first run in 1780, remains one of the most prestigious races in the world.
Today Epsom is a smart, compact commuter town, and racing still drives real economic weight locally, alongside a thriving health and wellbeing sector that nods back to its spa-town roots.
Its top attraction is unsurprisingly Epsom Downs Racecourse, especially over Derby week. Giddy up!
